20 January 2010 - Cubicle 7 Entertainment and Sophisticated Games announce that they are developing The One Ring: The Lord of the Rings® Role-playing Game.

Cubicle 7 Entertainment and Sophisticated Games are proud to announce that they are jointly developing The One Ring: The Lord of the Rings® Role-playing Game.

The designer and lead writer of this project, Francesco Nepitello, is a games industry veteran, best known for the hugely successful and critically acclaimed War of the Ring strategy board game, which he designed with The One Ring co-designer Marco Maggi and Roberto di Meglio. A recipient of the International Gamers Award, War of the Ring is recognised by many ‘Lord of the Rings’ enthusiasts and hobby gamers alike as one of the most engaging recreations of the world-renowned fantasy saga by J.R.R. Tolkien. Francesco and Marco are the designers of other immersive board game titles like Marvel Super Heroes and Age of Conan, but started their game-designing careers creating Lex Arcana, the most successful and popular fantasy role-playing game published in Italy.

Francesco has designed the new LOTR RPG game system to make sure that players are completely immersed in Middle-earth from the moment they begin creating their characters. As an experienced designer of games based on JRR Tolkien, as well as being a lifelong devotee of the Tolkien works, Francesco brings a dimension -and a depth- to this RPG which has probably never been seen before in a LOTR game.

Genaues Lesen der Meldung zeigt, dass der in Cambridge ansäßige Spieleverlag Sophisticated Games wohl federführend bei diesem Projekt sein wird und das sich das ganze Projekt nur auf die Rechte an den Herr-Der-Ringe-Büchern stützen wird, und sich nicht auf Material der HdR-Verfilmung von Peter Jackson erstreckt ("as part of our wider LOTR book based board game license").
Vertrieben wird das neue Spiel nicht von Sophisticated Games selbst, sondern von Cubicle 7, die ihres Zeichens Herausgeber des neuen Doctor Who RPG sind.

Klar ist damit, dass die RPG-Bücher mit neuem Artwork erscheinen dürften, da sie nicht mit Bildern aus den Filmen gestaltet werden können. Auch die Hintergrundgeschichte, die dem Spiel zu Grunde liegt, wird, anders als bei der letzten LotR-RPG-Version von Decipher nicht zweigleisig Buch- und Filmfans gleichzeitig bedienen.

Weiter lässt sich aus der Meldung herauslesen, dass das Spielsystem von The One Ring (ToR) wohl schon steht und das es möglicherweise in zwei unterschiedlichen Spielen eingesetzt werden könnte: Zum einen in "The One Ring" (mit direktem Bezug zum Herrn Der Ringe). Zum anderen scheint auch ein eigenständiges "The Hobbit RPG" denkbar zu sein.

Chefdesigner des Spiels soll Francesco Nepitello sein, der mit seinem Brettspiel "Der Ringkrieg" bereits eine extrem stimmungsvolle Spielumsetzung der Herr-Der-Ringe Materie geschafft hat. Neben Brettspielen, hat Francesco Nepitello auch bei der Entwicklung des erfolgreichsten italienischen RPG System (Lex Arcana) mitgewirkt, so dass er auch auf dem Gebiet der Rollenspiele zu Hause zu sein scheint.

Alles in Allem verspricht 2010 somit ein interessantes Jahr für Rollenspieler zu werden, die mal wieder Mittelerde besuchen möchten.

With gamer and fan anticipation growing toward the August 2011 debut, Cubicle 7 today released some details about the format and content of the game line’s first release: The One Ring™: Adventures over the Edge of the Wild.

 

The adventure begins five years after the events of The Hobbit. The defeat of the Dragon, the ousting of the Necromancer and the stunning victory of the Battle of Five Armies has made the land a much safer place. The Free Peoples of Wilderland are looking beyond their own borders for the first time in generations. Merchants are opening up previously-abandoned trade routes, bringing prosperity to the region and renewing bonds of friendship between long-estranged cultures. But while Lords and common folk become complacent in their new-found security, much evil still lurks in Wilderland. From the Orc-holds of the mountains to the dark and corrupt depths of Mirkwood a darkness waits, recovering its strength, laying its plans and slowly extending its shadow.

 

Small companies of heroes set out to explore the newly-opened frontiers. Whether their goal is to protect their homes, recover the treasures of a lost age or carry out the orders of their King, they could find themselves in the front lines of the battle against the ancient enemy, in adventures over the Edge of the Wild.

 

Focusing on the region of Wilderland – from the east of the Misty Mountains through Mirkwood to the Lonely Mountain – the game covers the geography of the region and its major cultures. Immersion in the setting is at the heart of the game. Players create their characters from the cultures of the region, integrating them fully with the setting and giving them a personalstake in the unfolding events. The wood elves of Mirkwood, the dwarves of the Lonely Mountain, the Woodmen of western Mirkwood, the Bardings of Dale, Beornings, or hobbits that have ventured into the region after Bilbo’s return to the Shire, are among the characters featured in the initial release.

 

The August release is the first of a series of core game titles. 2012 and 2013 will see similar core releases expanding from that point, first with provisionally titled The Errantries of the King and then leading up to the War of the Ring. Each of these will expand the attention given to Tolkien’s world as well as the range of playable cultures and races. “You could compare our approach to the way Fantasy Flight has handled the 40K franchise,” commented Dominic McDowall-Thomas, Cubicle 7’s Director of RPG Development. “We have a huge setting to explore, and this lets us approach it in stages, covering each element in detail instead of trying to stuff an encyclopedia of information into the initial release. It also helps players build their campaigns in a dramatic fashion. With Adventures over the Edge of the Wild as the starting point, the grand story of The Lord of the Rings is starting out, in the background, but players start at a point where they can influence events instead of just being along for the ride.”

 

This approach also allows the game to take on an epic, multi-generational character. While characters of long-lived races can span the different setting periods, others can pass the torch to their heirs (spiritual or ancestral) in later periods. “Some people have compared this aspect of the game to the classic RPG Pendragon,” Dominic went on to say. “It fits really nicely with Tolkien’s long view of his world.” In fact, the game is highly focused on Tolkien’s themes, with an emphasis on such values as hope, valor, and wisdom reflected in the rules as well as the background material.

 

The initial release will consist of two core books: the Loremaster’s Guide for GMs and the Adventurer’s Book for players. A full line of supplementary products will follow, with early releases including a Rivendell sourcebook and a campaign guide.

Interessante Dinge waren auch hier dabei, wenngleich nichts zum eigentlichen Spielsystem gesagt wurde.
Das Setting wird durch einzelne Module erschlossen, wobei zwischen den Modulen nicht nur echte Zeit, sondern auch Spielzeit liegen wird, so dass es angebracht sein kann, wenn man einen Hobbit oder Menschen spielt, mehrere Generationen von Abenteurern zu spielen (der offensichtliche Vergleich mit Pendragon wurde ja oben direkt gezogen). Auf einer italienischen Seite wurde über einen Vertrieb der Module in Boxen berichtet. Das ganze wäre dann sehr old-school für mich und würde damit sehr gut zum old-school Fantasy Setting Nr. 1 passen.

Auch die Aussage, dass die Heldengruppen in die Entwicklungen hin zum Ringkrieg miteinbezogen werden, findet meine Zustimmung.

Die Ansiedlung in der Nähe der Schauplätze des Hobbits macht auch Sinn, weil man somit neben Menschen und Hobbits eben auch die Zwerge und Elben einbinden kann.

Ich bin sehr gespannt auf weitere News und den August!

Ob das bedeutet, das es eine deutsche Version des Spieles geben wird, wage ich allerdings zu bezweifeln. Schließlich wird von Vertrieb gesprochen und keiner Zusammenarbeit auf redaktioneller Ebene. Trotzdem wertet es den aufstrebenden Uhrwerkverlag durchaus auf, der dann neben meinem Steckenpferd Hollow Earth Expedition noch ein anderes höchst interessantes Spiel vertreiben wird!

Ich halte eine deutsche Umsetzung einfach nur für nicht sehr wahrscheinlich, grade auch mit Hinblick darauf wie sehr die letzte Umsetzung eines Herr Der Ringe Rollenspiels auf deutsch gefloppt ist, obwohl das ganze visuelle Material der Filme genutzt werden konnte, was dieses mal nicht der Fall ist und durch die Filme eine vermeintlich breitere Basis dagewesen sein müsste.

Die deutsche Ausgabe ist primär gefloppt, da die amerikanische Ausgabe gefloppt ist und daher Decipher das ganze eingestellt hat, Die Ausgabe war für mich sowohl optisch als auch vom Fluff her genial. Leider konnte ich mit dem System nicht viel anfangen. Und Decipher hat sich zu wenig um Abenteuer gekümmert. Das Spiel hätte Frischfleisch ziehen können, ein Anfänger musste sich aber sehr schnell allein gelassen vorkommen.

Nein, das ist so nicht ganz richtig, anonymus. Die deutsche Ausgabe ist ja eingestellt worden bevor alle Bände/Boxen des englischen Originals übersetzt worden sind. Ich fand das CODA System und seine Bücher (und das gilt sowohl für die Star Trek als auch für die Herr Der Ringe Ausgaben) gut gelungen, sowohl visuell als auch vom Spielsystem her. Decipher hat sich an den Dingern einfach verschluckt, weil sie mit den Erwartungshaltungen an die RPG-Produktlinie herangegangen sind, die sie von ihren Customizable Card Games übernommen hatten. Das hat nicht gepasst und dann hat Decipher das an sich ordentlich laufende Produktpaar fallen lassen.

Dennoch habe ich noch Kommentare von Rainer Nagel (dem Übersetzer) und anderen Leuten aus dem Pegasus (?) Forum im Kopf, die deutlich gesagt haben, dass das deutsche Spiel gefloppt ist und zwar unabhängig von Decipher.

Das neue Rollenspiel soll (zumindest auf Englisch) schon im August diesen Jahres erscheinen.

Ein erstes Preview bzgl der Charaktere ist auch schon online. Ist aber nichts regeltechnisches dabei.

Was mir allgemein auffällt ist, das kaum der "Markenname" Lord of the Rings Name benutzt wird bei den Beschriebung auf der TOR-Seite und noch viel mehr, das auf dem bisherigen Produktcover nur der Modul-Name "The One Ring: Adventures over the Edge of the Wild" erscheint und kein Lord of the Rings Schriftzug.

Das überrascht mich etwas. Was haltet ihr davon?

Im Ulisses Forum hat sich Silent Pat auch schon dahingehend geäußert, dass das Ding beim Uhrwerk-Verlag auf deutsch erscheinen soll!
