J R R Tolkien (1892-1973)

-15 High-Brow, 31 Violent, -17 Experimental and -5 Cynical!

Congratulations! You are Low-Brow, Violent, Traditional and Romantic! These concepts are defined below.

J R R Tolkien could easily and accurately be described as the most influential fantasy writer of all times. His great, epic work, The Lord of the Rings (1954-55), set the standard for the genre, provided inspiration for fantasy writers for several decades to come and his influence can still be seen today. This influence of a single author does, of course, have its negative sides. People who don't read fantasy sometimes judge the whole genre by their opinion on The Lord of the Rings, thinking that Tolkien's less favourable attributes, such as his sometimes over-traditional prose, represent the best one can expect from the genre. Those who see Tolkien's great assets, such as his ability to stir powerful emotions, his grasp at telling a tale of truly epic proportions without losing the perspective of the (sometimes literally) little people or his skill at conjuring an entire fictional cosmos and making the reader believe in it, might, on the other hand, be disappointed when they look beyond Tolkien and find his less talented imitators.

Nonetheless, to ignore Tolkien is to ignore what amounts to the birth of fantasy as we know it. Literally millions of readers have travelled with hobbits through the grim world of Middle-Earth at the end of the Third Age and marvelled at how such a grim and violent world may still hold such beauty.

You are also a lot like David Eddings.

If you want something more gentle, try J K Rowling.

If you'd like a challenge, try your exact opposite, Philip Pullman.
Please, step away from the meat.

Your result for Which fantasy writer are you? ...
Orson Scott Card (b.1951)

-3 High-Brow, -11 Violent, 5 Experimental and 11 Cynical!

Orson Scott Card (b.1951)

Congratulations! You are Low-Brow, Peaceful, Experimental and Cynical! These concepts are defined below.

Although primarily known for his science fiction novels, Orson Scott Card is also a prominent fantasy writer. His suite of books known as The Tales of Alvin Maker are among the finest examples of how fantasy can combine page-turning narration with a discussion of deeper moral messages. The books are set in an alternate world where, among other things, the French Revolution never happened, which has made America look quite different than in the world we're familiar with. Apart from showing a different political map, the world of The Tales of Alvin Maker features functioning magic, the European settlers of North America bringing various forms of folk-magic with them to their new home. Here they confront Native Americans, who also use magic, but of a slightly different type. The protagonist, Alvin, is a seventh son of a seventh son and as such has great magic powers at his disposal. Much of the series comes forth as an attempt to discuss the birth of the US and celebrating its virtues without shunning away from the mistakes that have been made.

Card is one of the most appealing story-tellers alive today and has the ability to combine his light and easy prose with experimenting with what fantasy can be, by bringing up subjects such as racism and slavery, by using alternate world settings and last but not least by letting the "small world" of family-life (complete with sibling envy from those who weren't born with the ability to do magic) have a prominent place in his stories.

Card is also one to propagate against violence, but without falling into the trap of being unrealistic or romantically pacifist. The question of who should be reading Card, those who want to be entertained or those who want to be challenged is easily answered: They all should!

You are also a lot like Katharine Kerr.

If you want some action, try Lian Hearn.

If you'd like a challenge, try your exact opposite, China Miéville.

Damn it! Ich habe die Höchststrafe "gewonnen":

Tove Jansson (1914-2001)

17 High-Brow, -3 Violent, 3 Experimental and -11 Cynical!

Tove Jansson (1914-2001)

Congratulations! You are High-Brow, Peaceful, Experimental and Romantic! These concepts are defined below.

Tove Jansson was a Finnish painter, sculptor and writer. She was part of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland and so wrote her books, including her most famous works, the Moomin books, in Swedish. The Moomin books (1945-70), though perhaps not considered fantasy by some, are nevertheless fine examples of world-building for children, centred around the inhabitants of the Moomin Valley, where a family of white trolls known as moomin trolls live, and always return to, though they occasionally leave for adventures in the outside world. Though many of the Moomin books are pure childrens' books, Jansson conducted the experiment of letting the series turn more adult as she went along, the last three books (one collection of short stories and two novels) being psychologically complex stories that are just as fit, or sometimes perhaps more fit, for adults. Still, Jansson's somewhat romantic vision of the Valley as a peaceful haven of family life in the midst of a sometimes frightening and dark world is retained through-out the books. Though she considered herself a painter rather than a writer, Tove Jansson will always be remembered as one of the greatest, perhaps the greatest writer of children's books of all times.

You are also a lot like Philip Pullman.

If you want some action, try Gene Wolfe.

If you'd like a challenge, try your exact opposite, David Eddings.
