die Ursache des Problems im Threadcrapping verortet:In my estimate, a couple of recent threads didn't deterioriate because they were discussing controversial subjects in an insensitive manner - threads discussing: the extent to which the inclusion of virtual table tops influenced the design of the 4E ruleset; the question of whether the Retro-Clone movement is on safe legal grounds; the issue of whether elements of 4E met suboptimal rigors of playtesting. No, these threads had to be closed because they, and I mean ALL OF THEM, were continuously threadcrapped by certain people who had no interest in seeing the questions raised therein getting answered, and went to extraordinary measures to prevent others from discussing these questions and seeing them answered. Basically, the amount and nature of this threadcrapping had in each instance reached intolerable levels where discussion was no longer possible.
That such a development is highly detrimental to a site dedicated to the very discussion of such issues is, I hope, not a controvercial claim.
I know that usually around this time of year, I give my rundown of the nominations for the ENnies awards. But frankly, this year, I can't be bothered. I've never even heard of half of the list of obscure products that have earned nominations for this "honour".
I mean, really, when you think about it this means one of two things; either the hobby has become so utterly fractured that we are really all playing different games altogether and there is no real meaningful "mainstream" anymore; or the ENnies judges have chosen on the whole to favour game products so utterly irrelevant to the mainstream that even a major gaming nerd who spends hours a day looking at stuff about RPGs online and runs a general gaming forum wouldn't know them. Personally, I'm not very inclined to believe the first possibility, and must reach the conclusion that the ENnies have finally gone beyond the pale of run-of-the-mill meaninglessness into utter meaninglessness.
I mean, consider this: if a guy like me doesn't recognize half of the titles there, that means that the average voter will be completely uninformed. And of course, that means the whole thing becomes even more of a farcical popularity contest than ever before; the voter simply picking the one option out of five that he actually ever even heard of. If this is the "If I heard of it, it must be ok" Awards, then what's the fucking point?
Allein die erste Kategorie ist der Witz. "Best Aid or Accessory".
