Ich hoffe doch, das die Rangers gewinnen. Warum?

Die Rangers ist die einzige Mannschaft von der Insel neben Liverpool die ich mag.

Und?

Ich mag Zenit St.Petersburg nicht - sie haben ersteinmal die Norditaliener geschlagen und dann sie Marke Chelsea. Und solche Klubs mag ich nicht.

Ich bin eher für die Russen: Sie haben im Rückspiel gegen Bayern sehr clever und auch ansehnlich gespielt (im Gegensatz zu unserem deutschen Aushägeschild die vollkommen verdient ausgeschieden sind). Ebenso in den Spielen gegen Leverkusen.

Die Spiele die ich von den Rangers diese Saison gesehen habe war hingegen Zerstörerfussball der grausamsten Sorte

Das Zenit so ein Miliardärsspielzeug wie Chelsea (und der großteil der restlichen Premier League Clubs) ist macht sie mir auch eher unsympathisch aber über kurz oder lang wird es wohl immer mehr solcher "gepimpten" Vereine geben. Hoffenheim ist da ja auch ein gutes Beispiel.

Loan Ranger Steven Davis has revealed the inspiration behind the Ibrox men's quest for European silverware - an emotional pre-match plea from Ally McCoist.

Northern Ireland star, Davis, has his sights set on an historic quadruple with the Ibrox men after their penalty shoot-out victory over Fiorentina on Thursday booked their place in the UEFA Cup final on May 14.

Zenit St Petersburg lie in wait for Walter Smith's men and Davis and his team-mates will have he chance to write their names in the club's folklore.

"Coisty spoke to us all in the dressing room before the match about his regret at missing out on the Champions League final and told us not to suffer the same," said the Cullybackey man.

"He told us he had only one chance in 15 years at Rangers and we had to grab this opportunity while it was there."

Davis will have many friends and family in Manchester for the final, not to mention Northern Ireland team-mates for what he says will be the biggest game of his life.

He added: "David Healy and Warren Feeney have already been on to me about the final and hopefully as many of my friends and family can be there.

"It's going to be the biggest game of my life and I doubt I'll fully appreciate it until my career is over."

No apologies for winning ugly

On their way to the Uefa Cup final, Rangers have become football's equivalent of a face that only a mother could love. In the case of Walter Smith's team, the maternal doting comes from thousands of supporters too consumed by the joy of triumph to notice, or care about, the ugliness of their 'baby'.

In their wake, however, the Ibrox side have left a trail of opponents, from Panathinaikos in Greece through Werder Bremen in Germany and Sporting Lisbon in Portugal to Fiorentina in Italy, rushing to give public testimony to the hideousness of the manner in which they have secured a rendezvous with Zenit St Petersburg at the City of Manchester Stadium on Wednesday week.

Even Carlos Cuéllar, the exceptional central defender confirmed yesterday as the Scottish Football Writers' Association player of the year, would not quibble with claims from Florence on Thursday night that Rangers' ultra-defensiveness in a scoreless semi-final - settled by a penalty shoot-out - made them thoroughly undeserving finalists.

Cuéllar, though, was not ready to apologise. 'Maybe Fiorentina are a better team than us,' said the stoical Spaniard. 'But that's life. In football, the better team don't always win. I'm told the Barcelona players were saying similar things about Manchester United on Tuesday. This seems to be common among whoever loses.'

Cuéllar's defiant attitude is not only one that will be shared by his club's followers, but which mirrors the team's performances since they were parachuted from the Champions League - in which they finished third in their group - into the Uefa Cup in December.

The big defender is one of the twin pillars - the other is the veteran David Weir, whose 38th birthday is on Saturday - on which Rangers' success at home and abroad this season has depended. His performances since his £2 million purchase from Osasuna last summer have been of such a consistently high standard that reports of serious interest from Premier League clubs in England are entirely credible.

Kevin Keegan, the Newcastle United manager, has already watched Cuéllar on more than one occasion and it may be significant that the player rather fudged his answer when he was asked if he would be interested in a move south. 'I've always said I'm happy here,' said Cuéllar, 'and the important thing for me and for the team now is to concentrate on the 20 days that are left in the season and the matches we still have to play as we try to win four trophies.'

In the event of his leaving between now and the start of next season, Cuéllar's response could not be regarded as sufficiently emphatic to qualify for inclusion in The Observer's Said and Done column, but it does hint at a reluctance to declare his everlasting love for Rangers. With three years still to run on his contract, however, the club could command a fee that would be handsome compensation.

All of Cuéllar's redoubtable qualities will be required to help Rangers maintain concentration through the rigours of the next three weeks, in which their schedule includes six Premier League matches, as well as the finals of the Uefa and the Scottish Cup. Smith himself is persuaded that the mental demands of such a crowded end to the season are more difficult to handle than the physical.

'It's because every match we play now is of huge significance,' said the manager. 'Players would rather play than train and, because we've been able to rotate the squad at various times, it's only three or four who would be involved in the maximum number of matches. And the mental drain isn't to do with nervousness or anxiety, but with maintaining concentration. You saw against Fiorentina that the focus had to be absolutely constant, as they spent most of the match in our half.

'The other thing, in our case, is that we don't have a level of economy in our play, which means we're more or less flat out from the start. There's no doubt that success gives you impetus, but we have eight games to play in a short space of time, so that aspect has to be handled. The players have already shown often enough they can do that.'

The first of Rangers' tests comes with this afternoon's visit to Hibernian, opponents still interested in securing third place, which brings Uefa Cup qualification. Like every match Rangers will play between now and 24 May, the assignment resonates with gloom-or-glory undertones.

Aber die Europapokal... ähhh Geldscheffelungswettbewerbe für die Miliardärsspielzeuge aus England, Italien und Russland haben in ihrer heutigen Form den Reiz von Masern auf mich. Stimmt natürlich, ändert aber nichts daran, dass es hässlich anzuschauen ist. Ist aber sicher eine Frage des Standpunktes. Mir persönlich ist die Ästhetik im Spiel von Werder Bremen zehnmal wichtiger als der Erfolg der eher ökonomischen Spielweise von Bayern München. Aber natürlich zählt immer nur der erste Platz, egal wie man da hin kommt. Der Zweck heiligt eben die Mittel.

Nicht falsch verstehen, ich drücke den Rangers trotzdem die Daumen, ich hatte schon immer ein Faible für den schottischen Fußball. Danach werde ich aber diese Saison so schnell wie möglich vergessen, und mich lieber an die vielen Schlachten mit heruntergelassenem Visier erinnern, die die Rangers anderen Mannschaften schon so oft geliefert haben.

Womit Du die ganze Misere des Fußballs im Jahre 2008 aufs schönste beschrieben hast

Mir persönlich ist die Ästhetik im Spiel von Werder Bremen zehnmal wichtiger als der Erfolg der eher ökonomischen Spielweise von Bayern München.

Du sprichst mir aus der Seele, Wormy. Nicht nur weil ich großer Werder Bremen Fan bin seit Kindestagen an, sondern weil attraktiver Offensivfußball (wie ihn zweitweise auch Leverkusen spielt!) einfach viel ansehnlicher und fanfreundlicher ist, als dieses Minimalistengetue und rumgetrete der Bayern. Da ist mir einmal in der Saison eine 6:3 Klatsche gegen einen mitspielenden Gegener lieber, wenn ich dafür mehrefach Spiele mit mehr als 4 Toren meines Teams sehen kann.

Wer das Finale gewinnt ist mir wurscht: Wenn die Rangers gewinnen kann ich sagen, dass Werder nur gegen den letztlichen Gewinner des Cups in dieser Saison verloren hat. Gewinnen die Petersburger ist mir das auch recht, weil sie mir mit dem kräftigen Absauen der Bayern (und dem Vermasseln des Tripples für den Rekordmeister [Ich kann das Wort nicht mehr hören*würg*) auch viel Spass gemacht haben.

Ich hoffe einfach auf ein tolles Fussballspiel, tippe aber vom Ausgang her auf einen russischen Sieg.

Ich habe eine gewisse Verbindung zu Bremen (meine Mutter stammt daher) und wäre sicherlich schon lange zu Werder konvertiert, hätte ich mich nicht vorher schon mit dem unheilbaren BvB-Virus angesteckt. So bleibt es bei einer sehr großen Sympathie (was mich nicht davon abhält, mitzujubeln, wenn sie gewinnen , außer gegen Dortmund halt ).

Wahrscheinlich rühren von meiner Lieblingmannschaft auch meine Sympathien für schottische Vereine her. Vor dem Erfolg der 90er Jahre (da zog dann irgendwann eine gewisse Pomadigkeit ein, mit der sie heute noch ab und an zu kämpfen haben) besaßen Dortmunder Mannschaften dieselbe Leidenschaft. Deswegen tut mir der Stil der Rangers in diesem Jahr auch nicht ganz so weh. Was zählt, ist die Leidenschaft.

Das werden dann diese Saison 68 Spiele werden und für ihren Erfolg wurden sie dann quasi von der Liga noch abgestraft, die inzwischen brav dank des europäischen Erfolgs der Rangers fein Punkte für die Europapokalwertung einsackte.

Zum Vergleich, Lokalrivale und noch-Tabellenführer Celtic hat noch ein Spiel auszutragen, nächsten Donnerstag. Die hatten dann 11 Tage Pause dazwischen.
